How do you get an Italian police clearance certificate from abroad?

You appoint an Italian lawyer with a simple Power of Attorney and a passport scan. We file the request at the Prosecutor’s Office (Procura), and you receive the Certificato del Casellario Giudiziale as a digital preview in typically 3–5 business days, with the original shipped worldwide by tracked courier. Sworn translation and Hague Apostille add roughly two weeks. Our all-inclusive fee starts at €290 — court fees, taxes and shipping included.

What It Is

Official Italian background checks

A Police Clearance Certificate (Certificato del Casellario Giudiziale) is the official document issued by the Italian judiciary detailing an individual’s criminal record. It is mandatory for employment, visa applications and citizenship processes (Jure Sanguinis) worldwide.

Many authorities also require the Certificato dei Carichi Pendenti, which lists ongoing criminal trials. Whether you are an Italian citizen or a foreign resident who lived in Italy, we retrieve and ship these official documents directly to your door.

The Italian Casellario is the legal equivalent of the Spanish Certificado de Antecedentes Penales, the French Extrait de Casier Judiciaire, the German Führungszeugnis and the US/UK criminal background check — if a foreign authority asks you for any of these regarding your time in Italy, this is the document you need.

Italian Police Clearance Certificate service
Translation & Apostille

The certificates we retrieve are 100% official, complete and legally valid Italian government documents.

If you are submitting them to a foreign authority — for a US, UK or Canadian visa — they may ask you to translate and legalize them. You can handle this in your home country, or add our supplementary Sworn Translation & Apostille service so your documents arrive fully localized and ready to submit.

Documentation

Types of certificates

01

Casellario Giudiziale

The standard criminal record showing final convictions. Required for most visa applications, citizenship and international adoption.

02

Carichi Pendenti

The pending charges certificate, listing ongoing criminal trials. Many authorities require both this and the Casellario for a complete check. It is issued by the Procura of your last Italian address.

03

Visura Iscrizioni

A comprehensive technical record of all registry entries, including expunged ones. Used exclusively for private legal defense purposes.

Why a Law Firm

A law firm, not a document agency

Online agencies can retrieve a standard certificate for less, and for a simple, clean record with no deadline that may be all you need. Clients come to us when the outcome actually matters: a record that may not be clean, a name change or discrepancy in the documents, a visa or citizenship deadline, an office abroad that raises objections. As Italian attorneys we act under a formal Power of Attorney, your information is protected by attorney-client privilege, and if the Procura or the receiving authority raises an issue, a lawyer — not a call center — answers for what was filed. Our firm is listed with six diplomatic missions in Italy as a trusted legal reference for their nationals.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be in Italy to apply?
No. We specialize in assisting non-residents. You do not need to travel to Italy; we act on your behalf via Power of Attorney. We can request certificates from any Italian court, regardless of where you lived.
How long does the process take?
Certificates are typically issued by the court in 3 to 5 business days, up to 10 for some Procure. If you opt for the supplementary Translation and Apostille, add roughly two weeks for the legalization process. Shipping times vary by destination. If you have a tight deadline, tell us: urgent handling is available for a surcharge.
Do I need it for a US green card or visa application?
If you lived in Italy for a qualifying period, US immigration normally requires an Italian police certificate as part of your file. Some green-card files request the complete record — Casellario, Carichi Pendenti and Visura. Always confirm the exact list with the receiving office or your immigration attorney; once you know what they want, we retrieve it.
Can I translate the documents in my own country?
Yes, you can receive the official Italian originals and handle translation locally. We also offer an optional Sworn Translation and Apostille service at €130 per document, done directly in Italy, which guarantees the document is legally perfect before it leaves the country.
What is an Apostille and do I need it?
The base certificate is an official, complete Italian document. If you present it to a foreign government — USA, UK, Australia, Canada — they usually require an Apostille, an international authentication under the Hague Convention. We can handle this step as an add-on service.
Is this certificate valid for citizenship applications?
Yes. Our certificates are the official government documents required for Italian Citizenship (Jure Sanguinis) and for naturalization or visa processes in other countries, including the Spanish nacionalidad procedure.
How long does the certificate remain valid?
In Italy, certificates are valid for six months from issue. Foreign authorities apply their own rules — many ask for a certificate issued within the last three to six months — so we recommend requesting it once your application window is close, and confirming the requirement with the receiving office.
I changed my name since living in Italy. Is that a problem?
It can be handled. Italian records are tied to your identity at the time, so a name change or a discrepancy between documents needs to be addressed in the request. This is exactly the kind of case where having a lawyer file it makes the difference — tell us upfront and include documentation of the change.
I don’t remember my last address in Italy. Can I still apply?
For the Casellario Giudiziale, yes — no Italian address is needed. The Carichi Pendenti is issued by the Procura of your last Italian district, so for that one we need at least the city where you lived. If you genuinely cannot reconstruct it, we proceed with the Casellario alone and check whether the receiving office truly requires the Carichi Pendenti.
I hold a refugee or asylum travel document, not a passport. Can you help?
Yes. A refugee or asylum travel document is accepted in place of an ordinary passport for the Power of Attorney and the request.
What if I have a criminal record in Italy?
The certificate will accurately reflect any criminal history found in the Italian judicial system. We obtain it regardless of its content. If you are concerned about what might appear, you can order a Visura Iscrizioni first to check the records privately — protected by attorney-client privilege — before requesting official certificates.
How do I pay, and when?
Payment is upfront and all-inclusive — court fees, taxes, administrative costs and tracked shipping, with no hidden extras. We accept international bank transfer (Wise) and PayPal. The proforma invoice with payment details is sent once we receive your signed Power of Attorney and passport scan.
