Legal Fees in Italy, Without the Mystery
Italy is one of the few countries where attorney fees have an official benchmark: the ministerial parameters of Decree 55/2014, the same tables courts use to liquidate legal costs. My rule is simple, and it is also the law: you receive a written quote before any work begins, and you can check it against those parameters yourself.
The calculator below uses the official values, updated to DM 147/2022, for civil litigation, criminal defense and out-of-court work. The figures are the reference range, not a quote: most of my matters for international clients run on transparent fixed fees, agreed in writing, in English.

How much does a lawyer cost in Italy?
Italian courts liquidate attorney fees using official ministerial parameters. Use this calculator to see the reference fee range for your matter: the same tables Italian judges apply. Actual fees are always agreed in writing before any engagement.
Court of first instance (Tribunale), ordinary proceedings. For disputes above €520,000 the parameters increase by brackets: contact us for a tailored estimate.
For many civil matters (property, inheritance, lease, insurance…) mediation is a mandatory first step before going to court.
Criminal parameters do not depend on a monetary value: they are set per court and per phase of the defense.
In complex matters (multiple charges or parties) courts may increase criminal fees by up to 80% (art. 12 DM 55/2014).
Out-of-court assistance: contracts, negotiations, legal opinions, demand letters, settlement work. The parameter is all-inclusive for the matter (art. 18 DM 55/2014).

Legal fees in Italy: common questions
How are lawyer fees calculated in Italy?
Fees are freely agreed in writing between lawyer and client. When no agreement exists, courts apply the ministerial parameters (DM 55/2014, updated by DM 147/2022): the fee depends on the type of court, the value of the dispute and the phases actually carried out, with adjustments for complexity.
Are the figures in this calculator what I will actually pay?
No, they are the official reference range courts use. Your actual fee is agreed in writing before the engagement and may be structured as a fixed fee, hourly rate or by phase. Many of our expat matters are handled on transparent fixed fees.
What costs are not included in the attorney fee?
Court filing fees (contributo unificato), process server and registration costs, expert witness fees, translations and apostilles, plus statutory add-ons: 15% general expenses, 4% bar pension fund (CPA) and VAT where applicable.
Is mediation mandatory before suing in Italy?
For many civil matters (property, inheritance, lease, condominium, medical liability, insurance and banking disputes) a mediation attempt is a mandatory condition before filing a lawsuit. It has its own (much lower) fee parameters and can resolve the dispute without trial.
